At The Throne in Heaven

Revelation 4:1-11

1] I looked, and a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice that I heard was like a trumpet talking with me.

The voice: Come up here, and I will show you things which must happen hereafter.

2] Immediately I was in the spirit: and, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne, (3) who was to look on like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow (Ezekiel 1:28) that looked like an emerald round about the throne.

4] There were twenty-four seats around the throne, and I saw twenty-four elders sitting on the seats, clothed in white garments; and they had crowns of gold on their heads.

5] Out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. (also found in Revelation 1:4, 3:1 and 5:6)

6] Before the throne there was a sea of glass like crystal: (also found in Revelation 15:2) and in the middle of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

• 7) The first beast was like a lion

• The second beast like a calf

• The third beast had a face as a man

• The fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

8] Each of the four beasts had six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they do not rest day and night.

The four beasts (day and night): Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

9] And when those beasts give glory and honor and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who lives for ever and ever (10) the twenty-four elders fall down before him that sat on the throne and worship him that lives for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne.

11] The twenty-four elders: You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for you have created all things, and they are and were created for your pleasure.

Revelation 1,2,3 Summary

The book of Revelation is written by:

John to the seven churches which are in Asia, (1:4) to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamos, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea. (1:12)

John saw seven golden candlesticks, and in the middle of the candlesticks was Jesus… In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword…(1:12-16)

…the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven candlesticks are the seven churches. (1:20)

…the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17)

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword… (Hebrews 4:12)

In chapters 2-3, individual letters are written to each of the churches. Each letter begins with a description of Jesus and ends with a promise to those who overcome.

Each includes a combination of these: attributes, shortcomings, warnings, consequences and instructions.

Jesus listed no shortcoming for two churches: Smyrna and Philadelphia

Jesus listed no attributes for one church: Laodicea

The seven churches existed at the time John wrote Revelation. Some believe the seven churches are also a picture of the progression of the church through history and the church of the Laodiceans represents the condition of the church today.
